Caring For Your Shoes
At Sanders & Sanders, our 153-year legacy of shoemaking is built on enduring craftsmanship and timeless design. With the correct care, your shoes will continue to provide lasting comfort, style, and durability. Here’s a guide to help you maintain them in top condition for years to come.
General Maintenance
To preserve shape, absorb moisture, and reduce odour, always use shoe trees. Our JOEL last-specific shoe trees are designed for our Hi Top, Lo Top, and Adam models, while our standard shoe trees suit other styles. Rotate your shoes between wears to allow them to rest and breathe. If shoes become wet, let them dry naturally and avoid direct heat, which can damage the leather and soles.
Suede Care
Our Charles F. Stead suede is treated during the tanning process for water resistance, but regular maintenance keeps it looking its best. Use a suede brush to gently remove dust, brushing in the direction of the nap. Treat stubborn marks with a suede cleaner, testing first on a discreet area to ensure it does not cause discolouration or damage. After cleaning, finish with a suede protector spray to enhance water and stain resistance. When using cleaners or protectors, take extra care to cover the crepe sole before application, as they can react with the natural rubber.
Sole Care
Our crepe sole units are securely cemented to the upper, with a rubber foxing (banding) wrapped around the edge. The sole and foxing provide excellent comfort and flexibility but requires special care due to the natural characteristics of the material. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight and heat, which can cause the crepe sole to soften and become sticky. Clean only with a damp cloth, do not use harsh chemicals or solvents. Always remove your shoes by hand, as using your other foot can create friction that weakens the foxing and may cause it to peel or separate.
Refurbishment Service
To ensure your shoes stay in optimal condition, we offer two refurbishment options: foxing replacement and full refurbishment.
If the rubber foxing becomes worn or damaged, we can replace it, provided the soles and heels are not excessively worn. For a more extensive restoration, we offer a full refurbishment, which includes replacing both the sole and foxing to bring your shoes back to their original condition.
If you believe your shoes require refurbishment, please contact us for an assessment. Our team will review the condition of your shoes and advise you on the best course of action.
